Improvising with text – September 2023 Workshop

Join Alan O’Connell for a 3-week workshop on Improvising with text.

The workshop will run on Mondays.

Dates:  4rd, 11th and 18th of September
Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm
Location: The Lab Gallery (Dublin 1)
Cost: The workshop block costs 30 euros in total for Firedoor members, or 40 euros for non-members.

If you’re interested but can’t attend one of the 3 sessions, don´t worry – you can still sign up.

Here’s what you can expect:

Over the course of three weeks, we will play with words. We will take them apart and put them back together again. How we communicate with one another is not limited to words –sometimes what we say conflicts with what we do. Sometimes the words we say make no sense… So, let’s play with that and take the text beyond what we expect and what the audience expects. What can we discover when we take words beyond meaning until they’re just sounds? What is a word? What does it mean? What do I want it to mean? How can we incorporate that, so that it can best serve our scene? Then we’ll move to short pieces of text before using a longer piece of text, breaking it down and building it back up together. We will use the text in different ways to understand what feels right, what works and what doesn’t. And while doing all that, will laugh, we will shout, we will explore.

Commencing  20th June 2023

Bookings open for our Devising Studio.

Starting Tuesday June 20th, join us for a 3-week programme in creating collaborative performances.

Dates: June 20th, June 27th & July 4th

Unlike a traditional process of staging a play by rehearsing a chosen text, devised theatre starts from the group’s inspiration. This can be a piece of text, a poem, a feeling, a reaction, an experience, an interaction, a dream, a memory or another bit of information on which the group draws to create a performance.

The 3-week series of workshops offers an opportunity to learn more about the collective creation process and begin building and rehearsing a devised performance.

In the first session, we will explore our responses to a theme that we will choose together, while the remaining sessions will be spent experimenting with different techniques to build a short performance piece.

The cost of the Devising workshop block (that’s it, 2 hours a week for 3 weeks) is 30 euros for Firedoor paid members, or 40 euros for non-members.

Dates: 18th April, 25th April & 2nd May 7
Time: 7:00pm – 9.00pm.

Details & What Actors’ Studio is about:

We pair up participants, then they choose a scene among the scenes proposed by the Firedoor facilitator. Actors work on that scene over the course of 3 weeks, in our two-hour session on Tuesdays. If folks agree to it, there is the possibility to run a small showcase in a fourth and last session. The Actors’ Studio scenes are chosen from well-known plays and short scenes written by Firedoor members. If there is a scene that you particularly like, you can always suggest it to us.

Places are quite limited, so if you are interested please reply asap to this email and I will send you on payment details. Places are only reserved once payment has been received

Commencing 18th April 2023

April Acting Workshop 2023

Our April workshops will be on Tuesday and will run for 3 weeks.

Dates: 18th April, 25th April & 2nd May 7-Time: 7:00pm – 9.00pm.

Cost: €40  (Discounted fee of €30 for members)

Details:
Everyone will be assigned scenes to work on with a partner. They will each be about 5-6 mins long. Those scenes will be worked on each week and performed with a discussion at the end of each workshop.

The workshop will be split, with half of the time spent working on your scene with your partner, someone will come around to ensure you’re not struggling/give some brief advice, but for the most part you’ll have to figure it out yourself, how to block it, what props if any to use, how to stage it etc.

Then the second half will be spent performing the scenes in front of the rest of the class with feedback provided afterwards.

Ideally everyone will work on that scene, learning the lines and working on your scene to bring it to a polished level by the last week, evolving over time, taking the feedback into account, enhancing what works and resolving the things that don’t work.

Places are quite limited, so if you are interested please reply asap to this email and I will send you on payment details. Places are only reserved once payment has been received

Virtual Workshop

Wed 31st Aug 2022 @ 7.30pm
We will be doing a virtual playreading (on zoom) of Brian Quinns play OII. (Othello II) on the 31st August @ 7.30pm.

This is a modern take on Shakespeare’s Othello with all the characterisation, heroes, villains, scheming and planning that was in the original. In this version, a theatre company is travelling and performing “Othello” and are planning a 3 month tour of Greece, Turkey and Cyprus. Ken never gets the best parts, Michael Cassidy has the lead part, (Othello), in the play and Ken is plotting against him and Oliver, the Artistic Director, who has the main villain (Iago), because he keeps getting overlooked . Add in Desiree (Desdemona) who may or may not be having relations with a member of the company, Roger who is in love with Desiree, Mr Barry who isn’t happy about his daughter’s possible de-flowerment, Emily, Roger and Mr Duke and a cast of thousands (theoretically) and we have everything needed* for some hubble, bubble, toil and trouble!

We are looking to pre-cast some of the roles for the play reading so if you are interested please let us know and we can send you the script. Other roles will be cast on the night. If you are interested in attending and / or playing a character please contact firedoortheatre@gmail.com
